Upwellers Power Oyster Farms: Power House is Our Engine
A critical part of many aquaculture farms, floating upweller systems – known as FLUPSYs – are a type of nursery gear used to raise large quantities of oyster seed until they reach sufficient size to transplant to surface or bottom cages.
One of our most popular pieces of aquaculture equipment, Hoopers’ FLUPSY is designed for low maintenance and high efficiency. Incoporating a basket/silo combination for easy access to the seed, the system extends oysters further into the water column.
And below the surface, every FLUPSY includes a Power House Ice Eater to circulate water and deliver optimal growing conditions. The pump pulls water out of the FLUPSY’s central trough, drawing water from each silo and creating flow through the seedbed to provide the oysters with nutrients.
Power House recently unveiled a variable speed system with a larger 1 HP motor that can be dialed back or ramped up depending on the stage of oysters. The Vari-Speed pump uses frequency drive technology to adjust water flow. As our managing partner Ricky Fitzhugh said:
Our experience with Power House is helping advance the aquaculture industry. Because of their dedication to continuous improvement, they asked questions to understand what oyster growers need. As a result, they developed the Vari-Speed ice-pump/aerator which easily and efficiently ensures superior water flow in every grow-out condition.
Every FLUPSY we sell includes a standard 3/4 HP Power House Ice Eater. Now, we’re also offering the larger, 1 HP Vari-Speed pump and as an optional upgrade with each purchase.
Power House products are energy-efficient, long-lasting and proven. We partnered with them because they share our commitment to the environment. They recognize the importance of protecting the waters where our FLUPSY’s are deployed while ensuring maximum efficiency and performance in all climates.
Located in Owings Mills, Maryland, Power House is a division of Bearon Manufacturing.
