The Hoopers Island Oyster Co. has high quality oyster larvae and seed ranging from 1 mm – 24 mm for commercial aquaculture farms and oyster gardeners.
Reared at our Crocheron and Fishing Creek nurseries, we offer a range of sizes and strains to meet the needs of various regions and conditions. Hoopers uses state of the art technology and grow out gear to ensure our animals are healthy, fast growing and consistent.
Hoopers Island Oyster Co. produces a variety of strains using broodstock from the VIMS breeding program. Disease resistant strains include DBY, LOLA, HANA and Crossbreed. We strive to produce all strains on a consistent basis.
Our disease-resistant, natural triploid oysters are sold under contract with the College of William and Mary and originate from broodstock selectively bred at the Virginia Institute for Marine Sciences (VIMS).
Oysters are bred for shape, size and disease resistance as well as a range of salinity. Commercial aquaculture farmers and oyster gardeners can pick the broodstock they desire to match their operations.
Nurturing care, state-of-the-art technology and the most advanced grow-out gear ensures that our oysters are raised in a healthy, consistent and fast-growing environment.
The company offers two oyster larvae and seed products: Eyed larvae and cultchless seed. The eyed larvae has a range of setting rates averaging 15-20% with an average of 18-20%.
Cultchless oyster seed is available in a range of sizes from 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 mm through November. All seed sizes are given for the size of the screen in which they retain on; actual shell size will be larger.
The Hoopers Island Oyster Co. larvae and seed program serves the aquaculture industry and produces natural triploids under contract with the College of William and Mary. All strains above are available as natural triploids. For more information on disease resistant strains visit VIMS or contact Hoopers Island.
